100 Years of Korean History — From the Japanese Occupation to Kim Jong Un
On August 22, 1910, Japan invaded the Korean peninsula (not for the first time) and began a period of occupation that would not end until 1945. We'll trace some of the key events marking the end of the Korean empire and the political, military, and cultural dominance of the Japanese. We'll look into the turbulent period of the division of Korea and the Korean War (1945-1953). Next, we'll take up the rise of Kim Il Sung and his dynasty and the simultaneous slow development of South Korea from dictatorship to prosperous democracy. Finally, we'll speculate on the curious Trump-Kim story, the nuclear issue, and the future of the Korean peninsula.
