Through the Literary Lens—America the Beautiful
Americans have written about the environment from colonial times to the present moment of environmental crisis, creating a colorful tradition of literature in dialogue with the nation's diverse landscapes. This talk will give an outline of that tradition as we explore works from a wide variety of writers such as, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and Rachel Carson. Topics will include landscape and American nationalism, the social construction of landscapes and animals, and versions of the vitally important land ethic.

These special programs, featuring presentations on the arts and humanities will be held on the third Thursdays of May, June, and July, from 1:00-2:30 pm. $39 for the series or $15 per session. Deerfield Center.
