welcome

Welcome to the Common Ground web site.

The new cg.org is almost here!  Please pardon our mess as the final features are added and we iron out a few kinks.

We hope you'll take the time to explore a bit and to discover the many features that will enhance your CG experience. And watch for changes. Some exciting new features are being added. They include a CG "Open Forum", CG's own social-networking site (think "Facebook), and PayPal facility for purchases or contributions. Downloads of selected lectures will at last be available this fall.

What's Happening?

Common Ground is a center for inquiry, study, and dialogue. Our primary concern is the human quest for understanding and the human pursuit of significance. While our endeavor began with the study of world religions and the commitment to inter-faith dialogue, our range of program offerings has been greatly expanded over the past several years.

Today, our primary focus is on the world's great cultural, philosophical, religious, and spiritual traditions and their implications for every dimension of human experience. Our course offerings include a tremendous variety of topics, including, but not limited to: history, literature, art, science, psychology, business, relationship, health, and personal growth. Our programs are shaped to meet the needs of all who are excited by ideas and serious about the quest.

Common Ground is for those who are already deeply grounded in their own traditions and for those who are still searching. It is a place for all who are fascinated by the convergence of the ancient with the modern, of East with West, and of spirituality with planetary reality. Common Ground brings together a knowledge of the past and a vision of the future for a better understanding of the present.

Common Ground is a fully registered not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.

CG.org is being redesigned from the ground up.  There will be too many new features to list here but please pardon the mess while we finish developing and testing the new web presence.  Thanks for visiting!

It’s been quite a year for the country and for Barack Obama. His job approval ratings have vacillated as he’s struggled with the financial crisis, health care, unemployment, climate change and Afghanistan. How’s he doing? And, almost as important in an election year, how do Democrats, Republicans and independents assess his first year? This presentation will offer quick but (we hope) insightful answers to those critical questions.

The spiritual landscape of Native America is rich and variegated. Today, we know only a very little about native practices that developed, evolved, and disappeared over the millennia of human occupation of the Americas. This workshop is an attempt to sketch what scholars do know, only surmise, and still wonder about with respect to the spiritual legacy of the first inhabitants of our hemisphere. We’ll focus on life in North America (and Mesoamerica) a...

Jonathan Sacks, chief rabbi of Great Britain’s Orthodox Jews, has written two excellent books about our increasingly diverse world. The first – The Dignity of Difference: How to Avoid the Clash of Civilizations – addresses our differences and how they can either build bridges or barriers. The second – The Home We Build Together: Recreating Society – explores ways of finding community in societies threatened by new forms of tribalization. He bring...

How do you solve a problem like Ahmadinejad? He’s become the principal source of Iranian hostility toward the US and the West and the major focus of western misunderstanding and mistrust of Iran. From Holocaust denial to nuclear intransigence to repeated threats to peace in the Middle East, Ahmadinejad is Iran’s presenting problem. But how popular is he at home? And what is the level of his real power in the complex tangle of Iranian political-re...
